What We Do or Will Do As Individuals

After I learned of the elephant crisis from the CBS Sunday Morning show in August, I felt responsible just because I was Chinese. I have closely read and watched anything I came across about elephants. On November 8th, I attended my first meeting with the Elephant DC non-profit organization. I learned there are many ways that I could help to promote elephants’ welfare. I pledge to:
-
Never purchase or sell ivory products.
-
Continuingly learn more about elephants so I can educate others.
-
Maintain Chinese social media websites to share my knowledge of elephants in Chinese and raise awareness around my circle of friends at the local level.
-
Continue working with the Elephant DC non-profit organization to emphasize elephants’ roles in the ecosystem for general public information and also to children.
-
Work with Virginia residents to advocate the Virginia government to pass a strict law to ban ivory trade at the state level.
-
Make donations to organizations that help people who are affected by elephants in Africa.

As an aspiring teacher, I feel this particular issue has a strong cause. We teach students about the enivornment and different animals. To see this particular species die out would be a tradgey. 'E is for Elephant and not Extinction'. I do not want to stand before my future students and tell them why we no longer have elephants in Africa simply because of human interference. I pledge to:
-
Never purchase or sell ivory products.
-
Continue to learn more about elephants and current policies so that I may educate others.
-
Work with non-profit organizations to help educate the public

Doing this case study really made me aware about a lot of things I really didn’t pay too much attention to before. For example what my everyday supplies were made out of and the process that was taken to receive them. My pledge after doing my research about the African Ivory trade is that before I buy any product I will look to see if the product is made out of Ivory, I will also will spread awareness on the ongoing issue that is the cruel illegal ivory trade, and lastly I will start supporting the foundations that are helping to stop the illegal ivory trade going on.

After conducting research I am now aware of how powerful and important this issue is. As being a future elementary school teacher I believe it is my job to educate the future generation about Ivory Trade, and why it should be made illegal worldwide. Killing an innocent specie for human benefit is wrong. Therefore, I pledge to:
-
Never purchase or sell ivory products.
-
Continue to learn more about elephants and current policies so that I may educate others.
-
Work with non-profit organizations to help educate the public

This project made me think a lot about elephant conservation and the poaching problem. I have learned a lot doing this research and plan to apply what I have learned in my professional life. I will continue to advocate for elephants and their conservation among family, friends and colleagues. I pledge to:
-
Not purchase elephant ivory products.
-
Spread news articles concerning elephants in my social network.
-
Educate people about the benefits of elephants to ecosystems and economies.
-
Expand my personal knowledge to help conseve elephants and make a career out of doing so.

As an aspiring elementary school teacher, I cannot condone actions that lead to such animal cruelty and the potential extintion of an entire species for the sake of a pretty mantle piece. How can I expect children to make moral decisions without doing them myself? This case study truly opened my eyes to not only the injustices which are happening to innocent animals, but the gravity of the looming date of the extinction of a majestic and much beloved animal. This case study has taught me the dangers of ignorance, which leads to dire actions not being done. I hope to inform others about what is really happening, so that the net of active members can widen to help out the elephants.
I pledge to:
-
Not purchase and elephany ivory product. I will will purcahse substitutes instead.
-
Keep my friends informed of elephant issues through social network sites such as FaceBook and Instagram
-
Take every opportunity to educate the youth of the issues
